ILLAN OHJELMA | EVENINGS PROGRAM:

Mother's Instinct is an artistic project by dancer and dance maker Saara Töyrylä. Inthe project, she explores and brings into light and into the sphere of public discussion both the biological mechanism and the diverse choreography considered to be the meta work, as well as the movement between the two. She approaches the phenomenon from her own experience, as well as through the perspectives of fellow mothers and fathers, human parents, caregivers, as well as through the communal networks. She also observes individuals and communities in the animal kingdom engaged in comparable forms of caregiving and using instincts when doing so. During the Humina Open Space evening, Saara will share her working methods through embodied research, an introduction to the conceptual map developed so far, and an exercise to be explored together.

Francis Maskens: Moving Chandelier
I remember as a child corners of spaces made me squint. I also have a fear of falling upwards in large spaces.
How might we/I empathise and connect with space? As I the mover passes through their surroundings in a continuous dialogue, spatial qualities affect and reshape my movement. Rather than treating space as an empty container, the task considers the environment as a partner in composition. The mover listens to, reflects and shares the space through the body.
The basis of the task and notion comes from contact improvisations compositional task of mapping.

Teos on saanut alkunsa työryhmän koollekutsujan eli Veronika Hailun sooloteoksesta "Osaan hengittää" (2025). Veronika Hailu, Elsa Heikkilä, Taru Skyttä ja Marikki Gaye ovat syyskuussa 2026 aloittaneet teoksen työstöä ryhmämuotoiseksi Outokummun Kaivosresidenssissä. Huminan Open Space -illassa nähdään demomuotoisena Hailun ja Heikkilän duetto, joka pohjautuu nelihenkisen taiteilijaryhmämme residenssityöskentelyyn.

"Ajatuksia tällä hetkellä" ("How about now") explores calming down, conveying bodily experiences, and somatic movement practice in a performance context. The work sees pausing, boredom, and focusing on the senses and embodiment as everyday basic needs and tries to offer possibilities for these to both the performers and the audience. Through this work we want to comment on the overstimulated pace of life in the society of our time, where everything needs to be entertaining, fast and impressive. Wouldn't presence, calmness, and enjoyment be enough?
The work is originated from a solo piece "Osaan hengittää" ("I know how to breathe", 2025) by the working group's convener, Veronika Hailu. In September 2026, Veronika Hailu, Elsa Heikkilä, Taru Skyttä, and Marikki Gaye began developing the work into a group-based piece at the Outokumpu Mine Residency. At Humina Open Space evening, a demo version of a duet by Hailu and Heikkilä will be presented, based on the residency period of our four-member artist group.
